AU uses the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS).
American University is one of the first schools in the nation to have achieved a STARS Gold rating (between 65 and 80 points) with a score of 69.90.
STARS is a voluntary self-assessment and rating system, comprised of sustainability activities in three areas:
Education and Research
Planning, Administration, and Engagement
AU received a 72.16% rating for Education and Research; a 52.62% rating for Operations; and a 72.92% for Planning, Administration, and Engagement; plus an additional 4% from Innovation credits. To learn more about STARS and our score, please visit AU's STARS submission.
American University is also a STARS Charter Participant and hosted the national launch of this campus sustainability system on January 19, 2010.
The Office of Sustainability, in collaboration with the Sustainability Project Team and many other units across the university, has actively been tracking activities in these areas and has submitted them in a public online reporting tool as of January 31, 2011.
