Parking Requirements
for Commuter Students living in Washington, DC
YOU
MUST PURCHASE AND PROVIDE PROOF OF YOUR DC RECIPROCITY PERMIT
BEFORE YOU ARE ISSUED YOUR AU PARKING PERMIT
In
response to dictates of the city government, all commuter students
who live in Washington, DC must obtain a temporary resident reciprocity
parking permit. Students who live in Maryland and Virginia ARE
NOT affected by this requirement. Also, part-time students
are exempt from this mandate. The DC government is requiring all
full-time commuter student populations residing within Washington,
DC to obtain reciprocity permits in order to park their cars in
the city. By obtaining a reciprocity permit, you may keep your
vehicle registered in their home state
Due
to parking restrictions, students living in Wards 2A and 2E (Georgetown
area) are not eligible for temporary resident reciprocity permits.
Students living in these wards must register their vehicles in
Washington, DC in order to be able to park in those areas. (More
specifically, these students must change their vehicle registrations
and driver's licenses from their current state/jurisdiction to
Washington, DC.)
To
obtain a temporary resident reciprocity permit, you must present
original copies of the documents listed below to the DC Department
of Motor Vehicles (DMV) located at 301 C. St., NW. The DMV office
is easily accessible via Metro's Red Line - Judiciary Square station.
The office hours are Mondays through Fridays, 8:15am until 4:00pm.
Requirements |

Valid Vehicle Registration from home state or jurisdiction |
2.
Proof of Insurance
You must have one of the following documents:
· Insurance policy with dates of coverage indicated
· Insurance card with expiration date as well as
vehicle identification number (VIN), make , and year of
vehicle
· Letter from insurance company on their letterhead,
verifying coverage as well as vehicle identification number,
make, and year of vehicle.
· Note: The DMV will not accept insurance
bills as proof of insurance. |
3.
Proof of Temporary DC Residency
You must have one of the following documents:
· Executed lease with name, address, and the landlord's
or leasing agent's signature
· Original lease or rental agreement with the name
of the applicant listed as the lessee or renter (may include
handwritten leases that are notarized by the landlord)
· Utility bill in applicant's name at current address
within 60 days
· Written statement from a person owning the residence
or his or her representative AND a utility bill of that
person AND a copy of that person's valid driver's license
or non-driver's identification card
· Note: The DMV will not accept credit card
bills, bank statements, school bills or cell phone or pager
bills as proof of residency. |
4.
Proof of University Full-Time Status
You must have a letter from the Registrar's office stating
that you are a full-time student or enrolled for at least
9 credit hours.
· Note: The DMV will not accept your class
registration or schedule, ID card, or grades, as proof of
University full-time status. |
5.
Fees
The cost of the reciprocity permit
is $338. Fees are payable to the DC
Treasurer in the form of cash, check,
or money order. Checks and money orders
should be made payable to the DC Treasurer.
· Note: All outstanding parking tickets must
be paid at the time of application. In rare cases, parking
tickets and/or moving violations from other states may require
payment before a DC reciprocity permit is issued. |
