APPEALING
A PARKING TICKET
PARKING VIOLATION FINE STRUCTURE
$10 FINE:
Failure to properly display current AU Parking Permit
$30 FINE:
Unauthorized Parking - parking with or without
a permit in the wrong lot/parking area or in
a designated reserved parking space, service
vehicle space, or loading zone without the
proper permit.
$40 FINE:
Absence of Current Permit
$60 FINE:
No Parking Area - Parking with or without a
permit in a posted no parking area.
Impeding Traffic - Unauthorized
parking or stopping your vehicle on a university
roadway, pedestrian crosswalk, or intersection.
Boot Fee - Fee assessed for
booted vehicles with 3 unpaid tickets or falsified
permits
$75 FINE:
Parking in Neighborhood
Areas - Parking on
neighborhood streets adjacent to campus.
$150 FINE:
Handicap Parking - Parking
in a designated handicap parking space without
the required handicap license tag or handicap
parking permit. This violation also is issued
to vehicles blocking curb cuts and handicap
access ramps.
SPECIAL NOTICE FOR BOOTED VEHICLE OWNERS:
If a vehicle is booted for 30 calendar days and
the owner has not contacted Transportation Services:
- The vehicle will be ticketed
by the Metropolitan Police Department
(MPD).
- The vehicle will be towed and impounded
by a local towing company.
- All unpaid tickets
issued by AU must be paid at the Transportation
Services office before your vehicle can
be released from the towing company. AU will
provide written documentation of your paid
ticket balance.
- The ticket issued by MPD
has to be paid per instructions found on
the ticket.
- The costs of towing and storage
are the sole responsibility of the vehicle's
owner, ($100 for towing and $25 per day
for storage), and must be paid to the towing
company before your car can be released.
- American University assumes no liability
or responsibility for your vehicle under
any circumstances.
A. Fines incurred with Transportation Services
are considered a financial obligation of
the University and records of fines are
maintained for four years.
B. Individuals are responsible for all
violations incurred by anyone driving a
vehicle registered in his/her family name
(Students can be held responsible for violations
incurred with family-owned vehicles).
C. Late fees that double the violation charge
will be applied after 30 calendar days from
the date of the ticket.
PAYMENT
Fines can be paid at the Transportation
Services office from 8:00am until 7:30pm Monday
through Friday or via the internet at www.parkingticketpayment.com/american.
When the Transportation Services
office is closed, towed and impounded vehicles
can be released, after full payment of fees, by
Public Safety with proof of payment.
Personal checks will not be accepted as
payment for booted vehicles or fines exceeding
$100
Payment may be made with cash, Visa, MasterCard,
Discover, money order, certified check,
EagleBucks, purchase requisition.
If payment is mailed, please
include the citation, your name and AU identification
number, if applicable.
Checks and money orders should be made payable
to American University.
APPEALS PROCESS
Appeal
form must be submitted within 30 calendar
days from the date of the ticket.
Individuals may appeal parking citations by
appearing in person at the Transportation Services
Office to complete a hardcopy appeal form or
complete the form online using Public Safety's
Appeal form
The Appeals process is an administrative process;
therefore, a hearing will not be conducted.
Appellants will be notified by mail of the
decision.
The decision of the Appeal Board is final and
binding.
In order for your appeal to be processed in
a timely manner, pertinent documentation should
be submitted when the appeal is filed if available.
