WHAT IS CARPOOLING?
Carpooling is when two or more commuters ride
together in a private automobile on a continuing
basis, regardless of their relationship to each
other or the cost of sharing agreements. Carpooling
is the simplest and most common “ridesharing”
arrangement
WHY CAR POOL?
-Share the cost parking
-Share the cost of gas
-Share the stress of driving
-Reduce vehicle emissions
WHO CAN SIGN UP FOR A
CAR POOL PERMIT?
-Any faculty, staff, or commuter student may sign-up
for a permit.
-Paper forms are available at the Transportation
Services Office.
-The on-line application can be found at www.american.edu/finance/ts.
-Registering for a car pool permit cancels all
other university parking -permits
held by the applicant.
HOW MANY VEHICLES CAN BE IN A CAR POOL?
Up to four (4) vehicles may be in a car pool.
Only one university parking permit is issued per
carpool, and only one of the registered vehicles
may be parked in the designated lot at any time.
Participants will coordinate who is driving to
campus / who receives and displays the permit
on a given day.

WHERE CAN I PARK?
Car pool permits are valid in all Faculty/Staff
parking lots. Car pool permits are not valid in
resident student parking lots or university assigned
parking spaces.
WHAT IF WE CAN’T DRIVE ONE OF OUR
DESIGNATED FOUR VEHICLES?
If the members of the car pool must drive a non-permitted
vehicle (a vehicle not registered to the car pool),
the group must obtain a temporary parking permit
from Transportation Services. When an individual
chooses to drive separately from the group, they
must park in a pay as you go parking facility
(Nebraska Lot or Katzen Art Center Garage) and
pay the daily/hourly parking rate.
American University participates in Commuter
Connections Guaranteed Ride Home project, which
ensures that anyone who car pools to work will
receive a ride home if an emergency should arise
and they are unable to find transportation home
with their car pool. (Some restrictions apply)
PLEASE NOTE: American University does not assume
any liability for creating or maintaining a car
pool. Participation in a car pool is at the participant’s
own risk. Car pool participants are solely responsible
for the members and vehicles of the car pool.
