As a student visiting American University's (AU) Washington Semester program, you should first contact your home institution to apply for financial aid. Your financial aid office may ask you to complete a consortium agreement with the AU Financial Aid Office. The consortium agreement is a document in which both offices agree which school will be processing the financial aid for the semester you will be visiting AU. This can be faxed to our attention at 202-885-1129.

If your home school is unable to provide you with aid, then you may be eligible to receive federal aid through the AU Financial Aid office. To apply, you will need to complete the following steps. Once these have been received, our office will notify you if any additional information is needed.

  1. Complete the AU Visiting Student Consortium Agreement.
  2. Submit a copy of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to our office by adding the AU school code 001434.

Financial aid through the AU Financial Aid office may consist of federal student loans, federal parent loans, federal grants, and outside alternative loans. Federal work study is not available to visiting students.
