GAMES+ Summit

You love games + You love your profession. What would that look like if you could put them together? GAMES+

On Tuesday, January 17, 2017, some of the nation’s most influential names in game design theory and practice will convene an exclusive summit showcasing the latest concepts, designs, and prototypes that combine the energy and innovation of games with the key sectors of museums, health, cities, education, journalism and storytelling.

Featuring a wide-ranging array of seminars, presentations, and one-on-one engagements, topped off with an evening reception, GAMES+ has been specifically created by American University Game Lab for women and men working in government, NGO, non-profit, educational and private-sector positions who are looking for unique professional development opportunities, as well as those who are interested in obtaining a certificate and/or master's credentials in games.

Metro

The closest metro stop is Crystal City (yellow & blue lines).
The location is about a 7-minute walk from the station (you can also walk through the Crystal City Shops “Underground” and make most of the trip indoors - follow signs to “23rd Street”).

Parking

The building has an underground parking deck on 23rd Street S and Crystal Drive, right at the intersection. When you enter the parking lot, turn left following signs to the restaurant “Ruth’s Chris.” Make sure to park in the green zone to access the building directly (if you’re not sure, the pillars have the building address on them as well).

This session covers the growing demand for games and play at museums and art galleries around the world. Hear from the people who curate and organize game events at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Goethe Institute, Hana McLure Center in Scotland and others. This session exposes the existing and planned relationships between game makers, museums, and other cultural institutions. Learn how game communities and cultural institutions can be allies in stimulating industries, education, and creating new works that challenge the boundaries of art and technology.

Health games are evolving at a tremendous rate. We may soon see doctors giving prescriptions for “gaming therapies” for physical ailments and cognitive conditions. The session will examine a recent neurogaming therapy designed by Asst. Professor Bob Hone in collaboration with researchers at the National Institutes of Mental Health that aims to decrease symptoms in children with severe anxiety. With that as a starting point, we will then explore how parallel advances in sensor technologies and medical research may create new GAMES+ Health opportunities.

Play can strengthen cities, gather open data, and introduce neighbors. New forms with mobile media are combining urban streets with digital flows of information, from Pokémon Go, to mapping neighborhood history. Games can get us out in public space, building social capital and ties to local business. What are DC leaders doing to test the impact of such games? Will the DC approach be different than what is emerging in Copenhagen or Los Angeles? After some provocations, we will debate how to create the right mix of funding and empirical tests here in DC.

Game and play serve a variety of functions in education, training and assessment. Drawing on research and real world projects with the the Education Testing Services (ETS), Deloitte consulting and others, we explore lessons learned and possible futures for games and education in classrooms, corporate meeting rooms and informal learning environments.

The world of journalism is under intense pressure and criticism, but some of its challenges can and have been solved by games. Learn how games are being used to improve the form and function of journalism.

Stories are at the center of how we understand the world and communicate to one another. Unlike books and movies, games add interactivity and play which opens up a new world of interactive experiences. Join us in exploring the rich confluence of games and storytelling.
