Unrestricted Gifts

Unrestricted annual gifts are a top priority for American University. The AU Fund for Excellence includes unrestricted gifts given without any limitations on their use. These gifts support all areas of the institution and allow the university to use the funds in areas where they are most needed.

Other Annual Gifts

Other annual gifts may be broadly designated to specific purposes, such as a gift to a particular school or college, department or campus program. When made to the funds listed below, these gifts provide budget relieving support and allow each area of the university to use the resources to meet their most urgent needs.

Dean’s Funds

By contributing funds necessary to bridge the gap between tuition revenues and the true cost of educating our undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, parents and friends provide our schools and colleges with valuable resources year after year. Gifts to the Dean’s Funds gifts provide each Dean with the discretion to put your money where it is needed most.

University Librarian Visionary Fund

Similar to the Dean’s Funds, the University Librarian Visionary Fund allows the university librarian to enhance the library collections, facilities, and services, which support student learning in our nationally recognized academic programs.

Eagles Club (Athletics)

By designating your gift through the Eagles Club to a particular sport you are instantly enrolled in our "Friends Of" program and will receive additional updates and information on that particular sport. Your designation allows the head coach to apply your gift to the area of greatest importance within their program. All donations designated to General Athletics will be applied to athletic, academic and operational needs across the department. These budget relieving funds are generally used to support recruiting efforts, training and equipment costs, and team travel funds.

Campus Life

The Campus Life Discretionary Fund enables the vice president to support student and staff initiatives not provided for by the annual budget and to meet unanticipated equipment, facility, and program needs. The fund also assists students who have short term financial needs of up to $100.

Donors may now establish a named scholarship that does not require an endowment with an annual gift of $5,000 or more. The funds will go directly to aiding a student with demonstrated financial need. As with endowed scholarships, all benefactors have the ability to name their scholarships after themselves or in memory or honor of another.
