In 2009 the DC Reads (DCR) program, administered through the Center for Community Engagement & Service, began hosting Kids on Campus Day (KCD). This is our annual early college awareness program and end of the year community celebration for DC Reads tutors, DC students and community partners. Through KCD, children get a glimpse of college life. The program demystifies college and creates awareness that higher education can be a reachable, affordable, and achievable aspiration. For many of our youth it is their first experience on a college campus and increases awareness about the DC Reads program to the larger campus community.
During the event, the children receive campus tours guided by DCR tutors, attend an interactive book reading with a local author, participate in literacy activities, and receive new books to take home to build their home library as well as support book ownership. The tutors and children are able to connect around the importance of education, specifically higher education. Younger students are given the opportunity to look into what it is like to be a college student through a Q & A with tutors about college life. KCD also gives students the opportunity to interact with the AU community and become familiar with the campus.
Spread the word and share AU's Kids on Campus Day!
