American University offers a host of benefits designed to help you and your family.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

Employees may choose to sign up for Flexible Spending Accounts for health care and/or dependent care, which allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible expenses for you and your family’s medical care and dependent care, including day care. 

Transportation Benefit

Pre-Tax Parking

  • You may pay for on-campus parking with pre-tax monies through payroll deduction.

Public Transportation Benefits for Metro, VRE, or MARC 

  • For 2014, allocate up to $130, pre-tax, for Metro, VRE, or MARC train fares as well as up to $250, pre-tax, for parking at WMATA® Park and Ride locations.

Cycling Commuter Benefit

  • You may receive a voucher for up to $20 per month good at participating bike shops for purchase, storage, or maintenance of a bicycle used for commuting
  • You incur no additional cost
  • Vouchers are good for up to one year

Financial Protection Benefits

Life and Accident Insurance

  • Basic life insurance at one times salary for all full-time faculty and staff paid for by AU
  • Optional Life Insurance for you and your spouse/partner and children
  • 1 to 5 times your base salary up to $1.5 million (no medical review for up to 4 times your base salary or $600,000, whichever is lower if you enroll when initially eligible)
  • Spouse, same- or opposite-sex domestic partner coverage available up to $100,000 (no medical review up to $10,000)
  • Dependent child policies available (up to $10,000)
  • Accident insurance available for up to $250,000 for yourself; family coverage also is available

100 Percent Salary on Short-Term Disability

In the event of an extended absence due to illness or injury, we pay 100 percent of salary for up to six months at no cost to you.

Long-Term Disability

In the event of an illness or injury that extends beyond six months, you will receive 60 percent of your income plus up to 15 percent retirement contributions, and you can stay in our medical and dental plans. Also, if you’re with us for at least five years full-time, you still get tuition benefits. Participation in LTD is required after one year of service and the cost is shared between you and the university.

Long-Term Care Insurance

  • Provides a cash benefit to be used for assistance with daily living activities when disabled
  • Covers services not included in medical plans/Medicare
  • Individual policies with group discounts
  • Fully portable
  • Policies underwritten by John Hancock
  • Benefit specialists at The Todd Benefits Group Inc. will help you create the right customized policy to suit you and your family
  • Discounts also available for immediate and extended family members (spouse, adult children, parents, grandparents, siblings)

Group Legal Plan
  • Provides 100 percent coverage on a range of legal matters (includes will preparation, identity theft protection, traffic ticket defense, immigration, and much more)
  • Out-of-network attorney coverage also provided
  • Hyatt Legal’s Met Law plan

Pet Insurance

  • Discounted policies available for your dog, cat, bird, iguana, and many other species
  • Available through MetLife; policies are underwritten by Veterinary Pet Insurance
  • Fully portable
  • Covers emergency care with a wellness rider option

Group Auto and Home Insurance

  • Individual policies with group discounts
  • Options for automobile, recreational vehicle, boat, home, condo, renters, umbrella liability insurance
  • Underwritten by MetLife
  • Fully portable
  • Additional discounts for years of service, paid for by payroll deduction
