AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA

American University, Washington, D.C., and American University of Nigeria (AUN) seek a dynamic and innovative team with the vision, academic expertise, and administrative experience to establish and lead AUN, a new private university in northeast Nigeria that is envisioned to be a model for Africa. Based in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, the university which had its first class in September 2005, is the first private, American-style school in Nigeria. We are seeking resumes from candidates for the following senior management, administrative, and teaching positions:

Director of Admissions

Faculty (Junior and Senior Positions):

College Writing and ESL ; Business Management and Entrepreneurship; Leadership and Ethics; Mathematics and Statistics; Economics; Communication (media studies, journalism, media technology); Information Technology (software engineering, computer science, management information systems, systems and database management, and networking); Natural Sciences (geology, environmental science, physics, chemistry, and biology); Humanities (art, comparative literature, music, philosophy, and interdisciplinary humanities); Social Sciences (history, political science, sociology, psychology, and anthropology); Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology of West Africa; American Studies; History of West Africa; and Comparative Religions

Dean Positions:

No openings.

General Requirements for all positions:

Successful candidates for all positions will have (1) a thorough understanding of the challenges and significance of building a new higher education institution in a rural region of Nigeria; (2) an ability to interact effectively with both the University community and the broader community; (3) a commitment to academic integrity, civility, and collegiality in a community of learners; and (4) initiative, energy, flexibility, and creativity. Experience in Africa or other parts of the developing world is a plus.

In addition, successful candidates for senior management positions will have at least five to seven years of experience in comparable positions, preferably in an academic setting; superior management and supervisory abilities; and effective organizational, decision-making, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Applicants for positions will be expected to have the appropriate academic credentials (terminal degree preferred), as well as successful post-secondary teaching experience.

 

Salaries are competitive and commensurate with experience. There is a tax waiver on Nigerian taxes, and housing will be provided on campus. Applicants should include a letter of interest that addresses their qualifications for one of the positions above, a curriculum vitae or resume, and a list of five professional references.
