Faculty Leave and Holidays

Fall, Winter, Spring Breaks and University Holidays and Closures

Sick Leave
Time to care for yourself or a family member.

Research Leave
For significant scholarly, creative, or professional development opportunity funded by an award or other external source. We still pay 10% of your salary and your benefits continue.

Sabbatical Leave
After six years of full-time teaching service, tenured faculty may take one semester (100% pay) or an academic year (50% pay) of sabbatical leave. Benefits continue, of course.

Staff Leave and Holidays

Annual Leave
12 days to start, 15 days after 2 years, 21 days after 4 years of service. You can roll over up to 3 weeks per year.

Sick Leave
12 days to care for yourself or a family member. Accrues continuously with no cap (some staff have over 10 weeks accrued!)

Holidays
New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr Day, Inauguration Day (every 4 years), Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Day After, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve

Bonus Holidays
2 per year. You say when!

Other Leave for Faculty and Staff

Leave of Absence
A period of unpaid or reduced paid leave available for research or other non-medical reasons. You can continue your benefits, including tuition benefits.

Family and Medical Leave
We’re in Washington DC. That means you get 16 weeks for your own medical care PLUS an additional 16 weeks for family care. In some cases the leave is paid.

100% Salary on Short-Term Disability
Not what we like to think about but in case you do, we pay 100% salary for up to 6 months. At no cost to you.

Long Term Disability
Again, not what you want to think about, but you get 60% of your income PLUS your 15% retirement contributions AND you can stay in our health and dental plans PLUS if you’re with us for at least 5 years, you still get tuition benefits.
