2017 Staff Performance Awards: Make your nominations by March 1, 2017

Each year American University honors exceptional staff members through the Staff Performance Awards Program. This program is designed to promote and reward outstanding performance by staff at the university. Recognize your colleagues for their outstanding contributions to AU and make your nominations by Wednesday, March 1, 2017.

Who Can Submit Nominations? 

Nominations may come from supervisors, subordinates, peers, faculty, and students. The Staff Performance Awards Program Project Team will review nominations and select winners. 

Who is Eligible? 

You may nominate an individual, group, or team. Only full-time staff members can be nominated for the six awards below: 

  • Maria Bueno Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Collaboration Award

  • Customer Support Award

  • Diversity & Inclusion Award

  • Innovation & Change Award

  • Service to AU Community Award 

NEW FOR 2017 - The Faculty & Staff Collaboration Award 

The Faculty & Staff Collaboration Award promotes and rewards outstanding collaborative efforts between faculty and staff at the university. This new award is in addition to the existing staff awards sponsored by HR. The award recognizes faculty and staff whose collaborative efforts break down barriers and makes American University an exceptional place to live and work. There will be one award granted annually and the award will be presented during Staff Appreciation Week. 

Eligibility for the Faculty & Staff Collaboration Award

  • Nominations must include a minimum of one faculty and one full-time staff member; 
  • Collaborative efforts must exhibit a positive impact towards strengthening faculty/staff relationships.

Award winners will receive an award certificate, invitation to a special luncheon, a day off from work, $750 per person monetary award, not to exceed $5,000 for a group award (subject to tax) and a photograph with the university president, provost, and their division vice president.

How to Make Nominations 

To nominate a full-time staff member for any of the staff awards and a full-time faculty member for the Faculty Staff Collaboration Award, log on to the myAU portal, click “Work@AU,” then select, “HR: Staff Awards Nomination.” Complete the form in its entirety, then click “Submit.” Nomination forms must be submitted by Wednesday, March 1, 2017. Award winners will be announced this summer during Staff Appreciation Week.

Nominations for Faculty Awards 

Faculty, staff, and students may nominate faculty for the University Faculty Awards. Submit your nominations by Monday, February 20, 2017. Awards will be presented at the Faculty Recognition dinner in April. Click here to view the list of faculty awards and criteria for each. Performance Management Program Review and Redesign Update

In 2016, The Office of Human Resources (HR) began assessing AU’s Performance Management Program (PMP) to redesign the program to make it simpler, more relevant, and more useful to staff and managers.

To support the PMP initiative, HR engaged CEB, a best practices insight and technology company who are at the forefront of the changes in PMP that companies around the country have been making to resolve wide spread dissatisfaction with performance management. CEB assisted us with data collection, which included CEB’s knowledge base, industry best practices, and surveys and focus groups of AU’s staff, managers, and university leaders. 

Some of the major themes that we heard from our surveys and focus groups were: 

Things that are working: 

  • Cascading goals help AU to achieve its strategic goals;

  • The ability to create custom goals is appreciated;

  • The Year-end meeting is valuable; and

  • Managers regularly provide constructive and positive feedback, acknowledge successes, and work on career development, although manager perception of this type of coaching was higher than staff perception. 

Opportunities for improvement and change:

  • The process is disjointed and overly complicated including too many requirements and competencies;

  • The program is viewed as inflexible and a “once a year” activity that is disconnected from day-to-day activities;

  • There are opportunities for focused manager training;

  • The link between the PMP and merit is not clear because of the small merit pool; and

  • There is an appetite for 360˚feedback.

In December 2016, HR convened a PMP design team comprised of a diverse group of leaders throughout the university (see the list below for the design team members) to review the findings and define the parameters of the new program. The design team spent a full day discussing the current state, best practices, and recommendations from CEB. The team concluded that the complexity of the design elements require further discussion. 

While work on the PMP is ongoing, we recognize that it is important for you to continue to capture and acknowledge the hard work that you are doing. We also recognize the need to lighten and enhance the PMP process for both staff and managers. Although there will not be a formal Mid-year discussion, we encourage all staff and managers to continue to connect to discuss progress towards goals, celebrate successes, and identify and clear obstacles. 

Although the PMP review and redesign are in progress, the Year-end review will occur in June and appraisals will be due on Monday, July 31. If you have not yet entered your goals for the 2016-2017 PMP cycle, please take this opportunity to record 3-6 goals in AsuccessfulU. It is also an opportunity to note your progress towards these goals. The progress notes will populate in the Year-end form. Staff Annual Leave: Use it or Lose it by April 30

Did you know that no more than 15 days of earned annual leave may be carried beyond the end of the fiscal year (Sunday, April 30, 2017)? Work with your supervisor to plan and schedule your use of annual leave.

Fifteen-day carry-over means that for employees with a 35-hour workweek, the limit is 105 hours of earned annual leave. For employees with 28-hour workweek, the limit is 84 hours of earned annual leave. For employees with 40-hour workweek, the limit is 120 hours earned annual leave.

Online University Directory

If you’re missing your hard copy of the Information Guide that is typically published in December, don’t fret. We have a new online system that is coming in March that will be easy to use and always up to date! 

The Info Guide is the “yellow pages” of the university, with telephone and office location information of the faculty and staff by school or administrative function, as well as an alphabetical listing. With the implementation of the new online directory, you will be able to search by schools or offices and see the reporting structure within a unit. Each school or administrative department will also be able to customize the information shown in their directory, such as a frequent request for information that you don’t need to know the person’s name (i.e., employee verification). 

What do I need to do? 

Well, it depends. The information that appears on the directory is only as good as the data that is in the system. Is your current phone and office location information up-to-date? Do you even know what your listing is displaying? To check and update your campus contact information: 

  1. Visit the myAU portal;
  2. Login and go to the HR/Payroll Connection under the Work@AU navigation bar to the left;
  3.  In the HR/Payroll Connection, click on the “Summary” tab;
  4. Your campus information appears at the top of the page under “My Summary Information;”
  5. Update any of your AU contact information by clicking the “Change Campus Address.”

Stay Informed: Updates from Staff Council

Staff Council is committed to serving and supporting your needs. Stay informed and engage with us as we work to enhance the AU experience for all members of our community.  

Some of our recent efforts on behalf of AU staff include: 

  • Working with the Office of Human Resources on a proposal to create “affinity networks” on campus for staff with like interests.
  • Participating in a focus group with the Workplace Learning and Development team on the proposed redesign of the Performance Management Process (PMP).
  • Collaborating with the Faculty-Senate for the “Teach, Organize, Engage” forum (held on January 18, 2017).

This year we plan to continue our “Teach. Learn. Grow” lunch and learn series (upcoming sessions: March 7 and April 4, 2017) and are currently preparing for our second Personnel Conference.
