AhealthyU Fit and Lean Winners 2013

Fit & Lean in 2013

At the beginning of 2013, 110 faculty and staff members decided to uphold their resolutions and participate in AhealthyU’s challenge to lose weight and improve fitness.

Teams of four worked together to reach a healthy weight, as well as improve their muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility. Cash prizes were awarded to the three teams who achieved the highest percentage of improvement during the course of the eight-week program. Weight Warriors, made up of Amaate Neil, Michael Harris, Christopher Salone, and Joanne Yecies, achieved a fitness improvement of 475.65 percent and took home the $400 first-place check.

An impressive 75 percent of Fit & Lean participants achieved greater than 10 percent improvement in overall fitness during the course of the challenge. An honorable mention goes out to Fit & Lean superstars Timothy Staples, who lost 19.4 pounds, and Mark Schaeffer, who lost 15 pounds during the challenge. Congratulations to all participants!

Tobacco- and Smoke-Free Project Team Update

The tobacco- and smoke-free university project team continues to work towards launching a tobacco- and smoke-free AU campus in August 2013. The team, co-chaired by Beth Muha and Rob Hradsky, includes students, staff, faculty, alumni, and neighbors. To ensure that the transition to a tobacco- and smoke-free campus is a smooth one, the team has been working on details surrounding policy, enforcement, health and wellness, facilities and grounds, and communications. They also are in the process of updating campus groups on the progress-to- date and plan to issue a final report with recommendations that will be presented to Dr. Kerwin in early May.

As the transition to a tobacco- and smoke-free environment may be challenging for those who smoke, the university plans to offer smoking cessation programs. The team currently is working with CareFirst/Express Scripts and Kaiser regarding coverage and access to smoking cessation resources.

Learn more about the initiative, view a draft of the new policy, and get information on resources. New information will continue to be added to the website, so be sure to check it periodically for updates.
