Curtis Gans to Join Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies

AS DIRECTOR OF THE nonpartisan Committee for the Study of the American Electorate (CSAE), Curtis Gans has scrutinized voter turnout in U.S. presidential elections spanning many decades, including the 2004 contest. His work was cited by CNN, CBS News, and other media outlets around Election Day last November.

CSAE will soon become a center, led by Gans, within SPA’s Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies (CCPS). Directed by Professor James Thurber, CCPS provides an integrated teaching, research, and study program focusing on Congress and the presidency and the interactions of these two institutions. Gans’s examination of voting trends in federal elections aligns well with the work of Dr. Thurber and his team. For more information about CCPS, visit spa.american.edu/ccps.

Gans also served as an academic advisor to the Carter-Baker Commission on Federal Election Reform (see page 1), which the university’s Center for Democracy and Election Management is coordinating. Gans and other advisors have provided analyses on various aspects of the electoral process.

"I believe the Carter-Baker Commission can make a significant contribution to improving elections in the United States, and I am honored to have been asked to contribute," commented Gans. For more information about the Commission, visit the Carter-Baker Commission Web site.
