A Global Perspective on Information
Technology
SINCE 1995, KOGOD
Professor Erran Carmel has
taught the popular MBA
course, "Nations, Policy,
and Information Technology."
Carmel said that
the impetus for the course
was "the diffusion of information
technology (IT) from the G7 nations to the 200
nations of the world." Students explore national technology
policies, telecommunications infrastructure, and IT workforce
issues. For their central project, they conduct a
national IT assessment for one country and analyze the implications for global firms.
Dr. Carmel also created an on-line database to store
the assessments. Reports covering more than 80 countries
can be accessed as can numerous white papers on international
IT topics. He
reported that "corporations, governments, NGOs, and universities
have written to say they have used and benefited
from the Web site."
Kenyan MBA student Elizabeth Nderitu (Kogod '07)
took Dr. Carmel's course in the spring of 2006 and chose
her home country as the focus of her IT assessment. Her
research included conversations with the chair of Kenya's
computer society and journalists who wrote about Kenya's
information and communication technologies (ICT). "The
course stands out among other IT courses because it links
development to national ICT policy," Nderitu explained.
"The professor stood out as a person who knows his field
of study well and is passionate about what he does. I
would recommend the course, especially to international
students."
