Photo: Jeff LunsteadJeffrey J. Lunstead joined American University as the Assistant Vice President of International Affairs in December 2006, following a career in the U.S. Foreign Service. Ambassador Lunstead entered the Foreign Service in 1977 and served as Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives from 2003 to 2006. He also served in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Malaysia. In Washington, DC, his posts have included South Asia Bureau Coordinator for Afghanistan following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and as Director for Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. In the State Department, he also served in several positions dealing with international environmental issues, including as Director, Office of Environmental Policy.

Ambassador Lunstead received his B.A. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1969 and his Ph.D. (with distinction) in Asian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977. He is the author of several articles on ancient and modern South Asia, and speaks several Asian languages. He served in the United States Navy in 1969-1970.
