At 12 noon, February 8, 2008, AU Chairman of the Board Gary Abramson formally installed Neil Kerwin as the 14th president. The trustees presented President Kerwin with two symbols of office—the text of the 1893 Act of Incorporation along with the 1891 Bylaws, and the president's medallion, which bears the seal of the university and symbolizes the authority of the president.
President Kerwin then spoke about AU's history and traditions—including AU's engagement with the city of Washington, its founding as a United Methodist Church-related institution, the strength of its schools and colleges, and its commitment to the arts and sciences. He concluded his remarks by challenging the entire AU community to become more engaged in the life of the institution and pledged to make as one of his highest priorities, increased financial assistance for students.
