ICT Production |
| A country's ICT production is defined as the domestic production of computer hardware and software. In 2001, domestic ICT production accounted for 18% ($25 billion) of Singapore 's total GDP. [29] Singapore is the global leader in production of computer disk drives, which account for more than 70% of its hardware production. The country's other computer hardware exports include micro-computers, minicomputers, network systems, central processing units as well as printers, monitors, and keyboards. Singaporean Software suppliers offer customized packages, including payroll systems, applications for the textile industry, and general business applications. Although Singapore is known for its disk drive production, the long-term future outlook for this product is bleak. This is particularly problematic for domestic ICT production because disk drive manufacturing is the mainstay of Singapore 's electronics sector. Disk drive output has been in general decline in recent years, because the majority of manufacturing has relocated to other markets that offer lower-cost production.[30] As a result Singaporean hard disk drive manufacturers are facing hard times. Lower demand, reduced revenues, and falling profits have led to job cuts and reduction in operations.
