5.0     Computing & Internet Diffusion Overview

Norwegian computing and internet diffusions statistics generally depict the ICT environment to be healthy in Norway. Norwegians are regarded as a education oriented and tech savvy population, therefore as one would predict are among the worlds most active surfers. The following are a series of ICT factoids that should give you a rough idea of Norwegian internet and computer usage trends:

·        Number of computers per 100 inhabitants[1] is very high at 50.80 (ranked 5th in the world).

·        Internet hosts per inhabitant are high at 129.4 (see Graph 5.1.1 below).

·        Today there are 101,600 domain names registered under the NO secondary domain. The number is steadily rising; about 100 names are registered per day (As tracked by NORID[2]).

·        15.6% of all Norwegians have internet subscriptions. This is very high and ranks 9th in the OECD survey of countries.

·        The average price for an internet connection in Norway is roughly 47 PPP dollars, which is significantly less than the OECD average of 56.4 PPP dollars.

·        The Norwegian population is among the world most active online shoppers, with 12% of the population purchasing products online and 25% searching the internet for product information.

·        82%[3] of all Norwegian businesses have internet access (see graph 5.1.5 below).

·        Norwegian consumers and businesses have a wide variety of acquiring internet access (see table 5.1.1).

·        In a 1999 report by the European Information Technology Observatory, Norway had the highest number of PCs per office worker (110 per 100 employees)[4]. The European average was 54 PCs per 100 employees.

·

Overall, I see no real problem with Norway’s internet and diffusion statistics. Norwegian web surfing and online purchasing behaviors are also among the world’s most active countries (on a per capita basis). Norway has been very receptive to new technologies and should display similar of the dynamics of any technology savvy country. Early on, cyber-cafés were identified as one possible mode of spurring internet diffusion; however in the last few years, personal computers are generally owned (50.8%) by the Norwegian population. This trend will continue to foster ICT development.
