E-Government

Italy recognizes the importance of transforming the government through the use of innovative Information and Communication Technologies. One objective of this is to provide more services to more citizens, more easily. ICTs can also decrease government inefficiencies and wasted time and money. Additionally, transparency increases participation in government. This can also provide opportunities to Italian businesses, both to assist in the development of services, and because e-government is a driver for citizens to use ICT. The Italian Government has also assumed responsibility for the E-Government for Development program within the G8, and is a main sponsor of the eEurope 2005 plan.

Many e-government initiatives in Italy have been undertaken by local or regional governments. One such initiative is known as "PEOPLE", with 54 city governments coordinating a project to develop e-government services, such as payment of taxes, housing, construction information, traffic, registry of marriages, births and deaths -- each city is responsible for developing a section, and the results are shared throughout the community. 3 cities in Italy have set up a system to allow reservation and payment of parking spaces via mobile phones and smart cards. Systems like this, which can leverage Italy's high mobile telephony install base, would seem to be ideal investments.
