ICT Production
Italy does not have a major global presence in the production of ICTs. For example, 75% of the software consumed in Italy is imported. Contributing to this may again be the small size of the firms, as well as the struggle with software piracy. Telecom Italia is probably the most significant ICT company, providing infrastructure, services, entertainment, as well as owning Olivetti, which provides hardware and IT solutions to consumers and businesses. Finsiel is a major European software company providing solutions to businesses, government, banks, and transportation, among others. STMicroelectronics is a semiconductor company, now based in Geneva, but originally formed from a merger between an Italian and a French firm.
