Mongolia has one of the lowest population densities of the world. The capital, Ulaanbaatar, has a population of over 600,000. The main geographic concentrations of Information Technology (IT) exist in Ulaanbaatar, which is the capital of Mongolia. In particular, the National Information Technology Park (NITP) has been established as information and communication technology has become an increasingly crucial accelerator in the development of Mongolia in the twenty-first century.

The NITP was established in 2002 under the Government Act 107. The Charter of the NITP was approved by the joint order 210/216 of 19 July 2002, by the Minister of Science, Technology, Education and Culture and the Minister of Infrastructure. The NITP is a non-profit governmental organization. 13

The NITP officially commenced its activities on 6 August 2002. In the years 2002 and 2003 the park has successfully implemented the “Information Technology Park” project with the grant aid of U.S. $1 million from the Republic of Korea, and created the environment for incubator services.

The main objectives of the NITP are to support the development of information technology in Mongolia, and serve as the incubator for turning new and unique ideas of venture businesses into competitive products and services. The NITP also aims to establish a scientific and technological database with comprehensive services to increase the contribution of information technology to the economic growth of Mongolia and to become a hub of IT in the country.

The NITP represents Mongolia in the Asia Pacific Information Network (APIN) and the International Center for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI).
