Finland: An Overview

Located in Northern Europe, bordered by the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, and Gulf of Finland, and sitting between Sweden and Russia, Finland is a Nordic nation of nearly 5.2 million people encompassing 337,030 square kilometers. Governed as a Republic, with its capital located in the Southern city of Helsinki, Finland has a highly industrialized, largely free-market economy, with per capita output roughly that of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy. Its key economic sector is manufacturing - principally the wood, metals, engineering, telecommunications, and electronics industries. In 2001 Finland had a Gross Domestic Product of approximately US$133 billion, or US$25,800 per capita, with a growth rate of .6%. Finland's government had outlays of US$31 billion on US$36.1 billion in revenues.(47)
