Information Technology in HUNGARY
Internet Activity
![]()
The Internet is becoming widely used in Hungary. It has a strategic role to educate people to accept and use more IT. Although the government is supporting the spread of Internet availability, the Internet Industry is suffering from low, if any, returns. A couple of Internet service providers merged into an IT company which some believe will have future business success. Broad band capacities are very limited and even an ISDN connection can be difficult to obtain. However, there are initiatives to make a start on the "information super highway program" with media applications (15).
On June 26, 1996 Monor Telecom (MTT) signed an Internet provider contract with telecommunications company Datanet T. This is the first Hungarian Internet contract signed by a local telephone organization, which makes it possible to use Internet services at local rates outside MATAV's service territories (16).
September 1997 figures report that Hungary has approximately 49,000 Internet hosts (17).
