Human Capital & IT

The Hungarian labor force is approximately 5.4 million men and women. The minimum age of employment is 16 years. The labor force is highly literate with most people having completed secondary, technical or vocational school. Hungarians define literacy as one that is over the age of 15 and can read and write. For the total population, literacy is 99%: for the male population it is 99%, for the female population it is 98% (28).
Technical Universities in Budapest; has programs specifically geared towards IT. The University has a solid program in software development projects, i.e. a remote banking system for the Credit Lyonnais Bank Hungary, interactive services based on WWW technology. Additionally, the University has the following hardware resources: high performance UNIX workstations (HP, SUN, IBM, DEC, SGI), ethernet and FDDI network connections, and UPS, printers, scanners, back-up peripherals. Software tools include: Network client SDK 1.4; LOTOSPHERE integrated tool environment for LOTOS; TCP/IP development environment for UNIX and DOS; and DCE development kit for UNIX (29).
Due to the fact that IT is just beginning to take off in Hungary and the expected growth of the IT sector, I assume more programs will be administered. As well, I expect that the number of professionals will increase which will induce more professional organizations, trade magazines, and other resources.
