Botswana has a no real 'technopolis' as it is not a major producer of ICT products. However it has a few institutions that together provide the local and nearby markets with some vital technologies that allow firms to take advantage of some of the resources available in the country.
Botswana Technology Center (BOTEC)
The Botswana Technology Center was established in 1979 with the aim of being the leading center of technological research and development in Botswana. Its wide ranging mission allows it to focus its energies in many sectors including:
- Energy
- Architecture
- Construction
- Technology
- Communications
The center provides products, services and consulting to local industry and nearby African markets. Some examples of the work of the center include:
- Technology Transfer
- Services: “BOTEC …carries out the assessment and effective transfer of
technology to industries for application in the commercial production
process”(24)
- Consultancy: the center provides technical and financial analysis of
technological choices at the national and industrial level.
- Electronics
- BOTEC carries out R&Dwork in the field of electronics
- Develops the technical engineering workforce especially targeting the
manufacturing sector
- Designing and developing electronics products to be manufactured in
Botswana and sold locally and to other markets

- Calibration Facility The Transmille 2040 is a calibration lab that is build to meet the specific needs
of a given organization

with low power consumption levels.
The University of Botswana
The University of Botswana(3), also provides the country with a well trained research and development workforce from its Engineering and Technology faculty.
