The table above provides a comparison of Internet Activity in Portugal relative to some other industrialized countries.

Internet usage is growing rapidly in Portugal. The Educational Multimedia Country Report estimates that there are currently between 50,000 and 60,000 accesses in Portugal, each used by an average of 4 persons. This equates to 200,000-240,000 users in Portugal as of 1997, which is considerably higher than that shown in the table above. Services most commonly used are electronic mail and the World Wide Web, followed by newsgroups and IRC.

The MOSAICO Initiative found in a recent study that PC usage has also grown since 1995. It indicates that there are approximately 800,000 PCs in Portugal, or which 175,000 have multimedia capabilities.

Several Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operate in Portugal, some of whom offer services solely to businesses or academia, while others offer services to companies and individuals. A breakdown of the main providers appears below:
