E-Commerce & E-Business

In order for commerce to be conducted electronically, a few components need to be in place:

    • A website with products or services available for sale
    • Customers who have access to that website
    • A payment mechanism
    • A delivery system

In Cote d’Ivoire there are obstacles to the development of electronic commerce.

The penetration rate of the Internet is still low and a lot of those who use the Internet are young people with little to no disposable income, which does not really make them potential customers.

Also, the most common payment medium is still by and large cash. It is hard to pay cash for online purchases. Only hotels, restaurants, and some pricey retail outlets take credit cards. As a result, most people do not own one.

Also, the mail system cannot always be relied on to deliver goods to their intended recipients. Valuable items tend to get stolen.

Some banks have started to implement telephone banking and ATMs. For example, one of the local banks, SGBCI, has 25 ATMs in Abidjan and offers telephone banking to its customers through a service called “Vocalia”[1].
