its history and the ICT vision of the government.
The
information and Communication technology (ICT) sector is fast
growing in the country and is contributing in diversifying
economy. Government has
establish long cherish hope to become and
Cyber
Island and take a lead in the
region within the ICT sector. Government over the years has built
the cohesive infrastructure and growing environment through its
policies and government program. Legislation on data security,
intellectual property rights, liberalizing telecom industry and
promoting ICT education has enable country to have dazzling ICT
sector.
In 2001 13.3% of country household had PC which grew to 18%
in 2002. However, Government was eager to promote computing in 2002,
launching "A Computer in Every Home" campaign. The goal was to have
PC penetration of 60% household by 2005. According to Central
Statistics Office (CSO) PC penetration growth was about 33% compared
to 50% target. It has been estimated that
Mauritius will reach 43%
of Household PC penetration. Under the campaign state finance agency
would provide subsidized loans for buying a PC to government
employees and business were given incentives to establish such
special funds for their employees.

The government has strong track record of policy formulation
and implementation in the ICT sector. However, picture is not clear
as it looks. In a survey done by CSO 42.2% of household without a PC
were not aware of the assistance available under the program. Thus,
possibly increasing the digital divide.
