This
section is reviews domestic production of Software Development,
Hardware Manufacturing, R&D.
Mauritius has a grown tremendously in ICT sector and
is making progress to follow in footsteps on
India. There are no
recent statistics on the size of the overall ICT sector in
Mauritius but Data from
1997 suggest that ICT sector can account for 3.3% of total revenue
of the economy. My estimated guess would be in double digits as
country has truly progress in past 5-7
years.
Mauritius is focusing on the service sector of the
ICT and providing off source facilities to western nations. There
are some production activities in Hardware sector but is limited for
domestic sales.
Mauritius has mid-level
software development services which are limited to third and fourth
generation programming languages.
There are 150 companies in ICT sector
providing services to western sates and about 30 call center
companies for offshore calling centers. 41 domestic companies are
listed. The ratio between High-tech Export and Manufactured goods in
200 was 1% and in 2003 was 5.2% Source World Development Indicators
Online.
Telecommunication in
Mauritius has high
penetration and thus receives high attention from external viewers.
In 2002 with 40% sale of Mauritius Telcom to France Telecom the
government rec'd Rs. 7.2 billion which is equivalent to 50% of FDI
over 10 years.
Mauritius is marketing themselves as '
Cyber
Island' and
building the business friendly environment. As an English and French
speaking nation it develops an niche to market on comparatively
cheap labor and better infrastructure.
