IT Geographics

Two very distinct but important parts of the geographics of IT are termed "clusters" and "technology parks". A cluster is usually marked by a variety of technology companies located in close proximity such as the famous Silicon Valley whose expanse is roughly a 100 square mile area. A technology park on the other hand is usually a very defined area, commonly outlined with some sort of a fence or barrier. Inside the barrier is a group of technology companies that are typically intricately linked to supply each other with particular needs, a semi-modified form of vertical integration.

The intentions and recognition of the necessary geographics for IT within the Republic of Cyprus has been noted in the below quote by Mr Panikos Pouros.

"Moreover, within the framework of the New Industrial Policy of the Government, for the Development of High Technology Industry in Cyprus the concept of incubators for high technology companies and centres for carrying applied research and development in high technology fields, is promoted."(21)

However, at this point in time, there are no definate clusters or technology parks specifically for IT prevalent within the Republic of Cyprus. There is a natural possibility for the Larnaca free zone to be used as this type of facility. It can be said that incubators are forming cerca some of the universities, particularly The University of Cyprus, although as shown in the IT Workforce page, nearly every university has some program for IT incorporated into their educational offering.
