AU's tobacco- and smoke-free policy prohibits the use of tobacco products and medical marijuana on property owned, leased, or otherwise controlled or operated by the university including campus owned, leased or rented vehicles. The policy applies to faculty, staff, students, vendors, guests and contractors.
To assist with the transition to a tobacco- and smoke-free community, three temporary designated smoking areas have been designated for the fall 2013 semester only through December 23, 2013. These three areas marked by signage include, the Kogod ellipse, Roper/SIS walkway, and the green space next to the tennis courts behind the Sports Center Annex.
AU's tobacco- and smoke-free policy also includes the university's off-campus owned and leased buildings at 4801 Massachusetts Avenue, 4000 Brandywine Streeet, 4620 Wisconsin Avenue, 4200 Wisconsin Avenue, 4401 Connecticut Avenue, 3201 New Mexico Avenue, and 4545 42nd Street. Tobacco use is prohibited in all building interiors. Pursuant to the District of Columbia smoke-free workplace law, there is no smoking within 25-feet of building entrances.
