American University faculty, students and staff involved in human subjects research are required to complete research ethics training, such as those listed below. Collaborators and co-authors who are not affiliated with American University, as well as the faculty advisors of graduate student researchers are not required to complete or submit proof of such training. However, the American University IRB recommends that all researchers involved in human subjects research complete ethics training. Please note that the principal investigators involved in collaborative projects with their colleagues in other institutions are responsible for ensuring ethical research activity. If you have completed training and submitted proof with this IRB in the past, please declare so in your application. Your training certificate does not expire. Below are some training options that have been approved. American University can verify your certification with CITI only if you have set up an affiliation with American University.
- Complete an online training session in CITI - be sure to affiliate with American University during registration.
- Complete an online training session via the NIH Protecting Human Subject Research Participants tutorial.
- Present a certificate from the CITI program if you completed training elsewhere.
