Application Checklist

Applicants to a Kogod graduate program are required to complete the online application. Each prospective student is responsible for assembling all portions of the application package including the application form, recommendations, and academic transcripts in envelopes sealed by the issuing institution by the application deadlines.

The Graduate Admissions Committee will not review incomplete applications.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, but priority review is given to those received by each of the deadlines. Admissions decisions are released to applicants as they are made by the Admissions Committee.

Timeline

In order to ensure that your application receives the fullest consideration, your application forms as well as all required documents and test scores must be on file in the Graduate Admissions Office for priority consideration by the dates above.

Note that due to INS regulations, we strongly recommend that International applicants seeking an F-1 or J-1 Visa submit complete applications as early as possible.

For priority consideration for Graduate Merit Awards, applications for spring enrollment should be received by the Round 1 deadline and for fall enrollment by the Round 2 deadline.

Official Test Scores

Applicants must submit official score reports for all required entrance exams. If you are submitting test scores for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and/or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you must ask the testing service to send your scores directly to the Kogod School of Business, American University. For further information, see the GMAT Web site, www.gmat.org.

GMAT waivers may be offered for applicants meeting specific requirements for each of the degree programs. Details are located with application requirements for each program.

International Admissions

International applicants should first review the Graduate Admissions section for general application requirements. Additional requirements for international applicants include:

  • Official test scores from either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. Minimum scores should be 100 TOEFL IBT and 7.0 IELTS.

  • Official transcripts from any college or university from which the applicant has received a degree. If the university does not provide English translations with official transcripts, a notarized translation should accompany the original version. We recommend using World Education Services (www.wes.org) for credentials verification.

The TOEFL or IELTS requirement may be waived if the applicant has completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in a country in which the native language is English (USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand). Waiver requests must be made in writing to the Admissions Committee at kogodgrad@american.edu. The request must include detailed information about the applicant's undergraduate institution.

Admitted international applicants requiring an F-1 student visa should complete the PIIRF form and prepare the additional required materials as soon as possible. Please visit the International Student & Scholar Services website for additional information.

Graduate Housing

Due to a high demand for undergraduate campus housing, American University is not able to provide accommodations for housing graduate/professional students on campus. Housing & Dining Programs has contracted an off-campus housing web-service to assist with your search for housing within the DC metro area. This web service also provides you with a message board for posting and communicating with other admitted and current students. Please visit the off-campus housing web service at www.american.edu/offcampushousing for more information.
