Graduate Non-Degree Study

Non-degree study is available to those who would like to enhance their knowledge base in a specific subject matter for professional or personal enrichment, as well as those who have been advised to complete non-degree business courses prior to enrolling in a degree program.

Non-degree coursework may also preclude degree program admission though students who ultimately seek admission to a degree program will be required to complete all admissions requirements as detailed in the Admissions section of the website.

Complete the Kogod School of Business Non Degree Graduate Application.

Submit an unofficial copy of your most recent academic transcript.

Please note – American University does not provide visa sponsorship for students enrolled with non-degree status; students holding F-1 and J-1 visas are not permitted to enroll with non-degree status.

  • Non-degree applications for graduate study are accepted prior to the start of every semester.
  • A new application must be submitted for each semester of study.

Application and Registration Process

The Kogod School of Business Graduate Programs Office processes applications for non-degree graduate study in business courses. Application for non-degree study in business is separate from admission to a Kogod graduate degree program or non-degree study at another American University school or college.

  1. Review the Non-Degree Study Guidelines and identify the KSB graduate course offering in which you have an interest.
  2. Complete and submit the online KSB Non-Degree Graduate Application.

A Kogod Graduate Academic Advisor will retain your application in reserve until course registration for degree-seeking students is complete. Two weeks prior to the start of the semester, you will be contacted by a Kogod Graduate Academic Advisor who will:

  • Inform you of the availability of the course selected

  • Reconfirm your interest

  • Register you for the course

Note: Non-degree students must contact a Kogod Graduate Academic Advisor directly with any change of enrollment status.

Applying Non-Degree Coursework

Up to 12 credits taken in non-degree status may be applied toward a Kogod graduate degree program, with the exception of the Full Time MBA Program, which does not allow application of any non-degree credit. Completing coursework in non-degree status does not guarantee admission. Candidates must meet program admission requirements and complete the Kogod Graduate Admissions Application for admissions consideration.

Non-degree students planning to apply to a Kogod graduate degree program should speak with a Kogod Graduate Academic Advisor to discuss course selection and receive guidance regarding courses that may or may not be applicable to the degree program.
