Alumnus' Social Media Company Acquired by WebMediaBrands

Nick O'Neill, founder of The Social Times and Kogod alumnus.

Congratulations are in order for Kogod alumnus and entrepreneur Nick O'Neill (BSBA '05): his company The Social Times, an online publisher and events planner in the social media space, has been acquired by WebMediaBrands Corp.

The news was announced Dec. 11 on both SocialTimes.com and MediaBistro.com, a popular website covering the media industry owned by WebMediaBrands.

O'Neill started The Social Times over two years ago with the launch of AllFacebook.com, a website that exclusively covers Facebook-related news. Six months later he rolled out SocialTimes.com, which offers a wider view of social media topics.

NewMediaSchool.com completed O'Neill's online portfolio with its launch in August; the portal presents social media strategies and online training for both individuals and businesses.

The Social Times' events business is also part of the acquisition. In October, the company held its second annual Social Ad Summit in New York City to discuss the growth of advertising on social platforms.

O'Neill, who served as the only full-time staff member, will stay on with WebMediaBrands as the Director of The Social Times.

"This is just the beginning of a new phase," O'Neill wrote on his website last night.

"Over the coming weeks and months you should see a number of new writers posting on our sites, new event announcements, and possibly some new websites as well. The bottom line is we're dedicated to covering the entire social web economy."

According to industry blog TechCrunch.com, The Social Times currently enjoys about 500,000 unique visitors and 1 million page views each month.
