  • KCGC Distinguished Lecture Series, Session 3
    April 2, 2019
    Mr. John Brady, Senior Vice President for Cyber Security and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)of FINRA, gave a distinguished guest lecture on the topic of risk management.
  • Visit to Data & Society Research Institute
    March, 2019
    Dr. Heng Xu, director of KCGC, visited Data & Society Research Institute in New York City in March, 2019, and gave a talk on how various privacy preserving techniques may disproportionately suppress information for minorities or mask health disparities.

  • All American Weekend Ed Talk
    October 20, 2018
    Dr. Heng Xu, Director of KCGC, Heng Xu, delivered one of the four AU Ed Talks in the 2018 All American Weekend. Her talk, “Data in the Everyday,” visited the common myths and misconceptions about analytics in the Big Data era, telling real-world stories about the pitfalls in designing, performing, and interpreting data analytics in business practices.

  • KCGC advisory committee meeting
    October 9, 2018
    KCGC held its annual advisory committee meeting on Tuesday, October 9, 2018. Dr. Heng Xu, Director of KCGC, shared with the advisory committee members the value proposition of the center and the center’s vision and future plan on research and on bridging research and practice.
  • IEEE Symposium on Privacy-Aware Computing
    September 27-28, 2018
    KCGC faculty member Dr. Nan Zhang co-chaired the program of the 2018 IEEE Symposium on Privacy-Aware Computing, which was held in Washington, DC in September, 2018. The conference was sponsored by the Technical Committee on Security and Privacy (TCSP) of IEEE, and brought together experts from academia, government, and industry to present and discuss recent advances and new perspectives on related research and development in privacy-aware computing.

  • KCGC Cybersecurity & Privacy Forum
    September 26, 2018
    KCGC organized a Cybersecurity & Privacy Forum with the theme of "Bridging Research & Practice." In this event, technology, business, and legal experts presented a panel discussion on bridging research and practice in cybersecurity and privacy. Panelists included Patrick Carrick, Department of Homeland Security; Casey Evans, Kogod School of Business; Jules Polonetsky, Future of Privacy Forum; and Anthony Vance, Fox School of Business at Temple University.  The forum also featured a keynote by cybersecurity expert Professor Joe Valacich, Eller College of Management at The University of Arizona, who discussed how sensory data collected by human interface devices such as keyboards, mice, touch pads, and touch screens can be used for insider threat detection.

  • AU Cyber Connection Faculty Workshop
    July 13, 2017
    KCGC co-organized the "AU Cyber Connection" Faculty Workshop, a seminal one-day event in which faculty across campus shared their cybersecurity-related research and joined a discussion about even more dynamic and robust cross-campus, inter-disciplinary collaboration. The workshop was part of KCGC's ongoing efforts to actively partner with colleagues across AU's campus.
  • Resilient Cybersecurity Operations for Today and Tomorrow
    April 20, 2017
    KCGC co-hosted "Resilient Cybersecurity Operations for Today and Tomorrow" with AT Kearney. The half-day event centered discussion on cybersecurity risk management across the enterprise and the supply chain. A review of some of the key insights drawn from this discussion, including important areas of consensus and debate, are covered in June's KCGC | In Practice "Reality Check - Managing Cybersecurity Risk in the Supply Chain."

  • Cybersecurity in an Age of Uncertainty: U.S.-Israel Perspectives
    March 20-21, 2017
    KCGC co-sponsored and participated in "Cybersecurity in an Age of Uncertainty: US-Israel Perspectives," a two-day conference exploring cutting-edge US-Israeli cyberpolicy issues, including cyber theft prevention and response.

  • Solving Cyber Risk
    February 28, 2017
    KCGC, AIG and Axio co-hosted a workshop on cyber risk featuring discussions on how to evaluate cyber risk exposure, the maturity of cyber defense and response and the financial viability of recovering from an event.

  • Second Annual Regional Higher Education CIO and CISO Cyber Roundtable
    December 1, 2016
    KCGC and Verizon co-sponsored an event bringing together regional CIOs and CISOs from the higher education sector to discuss cybersecurity program development and strategies for increasing top-level engagement.

  • U.S. Cybersecurity Commission's September Hearing
    September 19, 2016
    The U.S. Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity held its September 2016 field hearing at the American University Washington College of Law, hosted by the Kogod Cybersecurity Governance Center (KCGC).

  • AU Student Workshop
    September 10, 2016
    The three-hour session, titled "What is Cybersecurity Governance and What Do You Need to Know About It?" featured presentations and discussions led by KCGC Deputy Director Rebekah Lewis, KCGC co-Executive Director Bill DeLone, Kogod Center for Business Communications Director Caron Martinez and American University Chief Information Security Officer Cathy Hubbs. Topics covered included:
    1. Overviews of cybersecurity governance challenges in the private sector.
    2. Categories of cyber risks to organizations.
    3. Discussion of communication gaps and strategies for improvement between IT professionals and corporate management.
