What are Academic Advisors? What will they help me do?
Academic advisors help students to plan a course of study that is appropriate to your academic background and intellectual ability, and is consistent with your education and career goals. Academic advisors provide clarification on degree requirements, process transfer and AP credits, provide information on academic resources and certify the completion of graduation requirements.
Who uses Academic Advising?
All students have access to Academic Advising and are encouraged to meet with their advisor during their academic career. Any student that has questions about their academic requirements or progress, as well as those who are experiencing academic distress should speak with their advisor.
Where is Academic Advising for Kogod located?
The Academic Advising team has offices on the first floor of the Kogod Building.
How often should I meet with my advisor?
Students are encouraged to use the advising department as often as needed. All freshmen will meet with their Advisor on FAT Tuesday, October 30. Students who are on academic probation or those that are experiencing academic difficulty are required to meet with their advisors more frequently as determined during the advising session.
How do I make an appointment?
You can schedule a 30 minute appointment online at
How do I make the most of my meetings with my advisor?
Once you have scheduled an appointment, come with an agenda, questions or ideas to discuss. Some questions that are discussed during advising appointments include:
How do I decide which specialization to choose?
I’m having trouble in a class, should I change my major or drop the class?
Which classes do I need to take, in which order to fulfill my general education requirements?
When can I take an internship for credit?
Can I study abroad and still graduate in 4 years?
Can I drop this class and how will this be reflected on my transcript?
If personal issues are affecting my academic performance (ie I am unable to attend classes, I have not turned in assignments, etc), do I need to contact my advisor?
Academic advising is a shared responsibility between the advisor and the student. We recommend that you stay in regular contact with your advisor, especially when you are feeling challenged. Your advisor will work with you to ensure that all courses of action can be considered for a more favorable outcome. He or she also can direct you to other helpful resources on campus.
