In this research lab, we will work with a group of residents at the Federal City Shelter to document their past and present experiences with the building. This project is pressing because City Council is currently considering proposals to demolish the structure to make way for future development. The current planning process has largely ignored the perspectives of those who live in the shelter and will be most impacted by any decisions that are made. Using digital audio recorders and microphones, we will conduct oral histories and ask the residents what they think is the best way to move forward. Using this material, we will craft a sound documentary that can be used by the residents of the shelter to mobilize towards a future they envision.
