This course will explore the critical literature from Anthropology and Sociology on International Development and Tourism. Bringing these literatures together we will gain some critical skills that we will then use to evaluate and analyze an eco-tourism trip to Costa Rica over Spring Break. Students will have the opportunity to either make a film on a particular aspect of the program or write a paper analyzing eco-tourism as an avenue towards economic development and environmental sustainability.
Students will become familiar with literature in the social sciences and humanities, but they will also learn basic ethnography skills. These skills will be put into practice as they learn to compare and contrast their experiences in the real world with academic analyses. In this way, abstract concepts become concrete and they learn to instrumentalize the academic work studied through program evaluation.
