Description: Students in this course will get a 360-degree experience of theatre and its disciplines. The class will start with an overview of theatre principles and concepts. The class will see 3 professional productions in Washington, D.C. and interview either the director, playwright or actors for each. The class will research and discuss each play’s historical, cultural, socio-political and artistic contexts. Then students will be divided into trios and quartets which will collaborate to write a one act play inspired by the plays they have seen. For the spring research conference, each trio or quartet will stage a scene from their short play, with group members serving as director and actors. Outcomes will be: the finished play, the staged scene, and a production book documenting the group’s creative process.
