AU Scholars | The Graphic Novel

This course explores the form and meanings of comic books and graphic novels through an introduction to semiotic analysis, the study of signs and sign processes (semiosis). Through this study of interpretive strategies, students will examine and collaboratively construct strong methods by which to study and critically examine works of popular culture, texts that we often categorize as "just entertainment" and feel a resistance to thinking about seriously. Readings will include various mainstream comic books as well as contemporary graphic novels. We will also consider theoretical work in the field of Popular Culture Studies including Stuart Hall's "Notes on the Deconstruction of Popular Culture," and Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics."
