Media Services - General Services

Borrowing Policy:

With the exception of the Home Use Collection described below, the majority of the DVDs, videotapes, videodiscs, and audiotapes in the Media Services collection are primarily used to support curriculum needs.

Therefore only AU faculty and their proxies are permitted to check these materials out of the library.

They go out on three-day loan unless an exception has been granted. Students and other users may borrow any of these materials for use within the Media Services department.

Fines for overdue items are charged for Media Services materials, just as they are for other library materials. Fines on daily checkouts are $1.20 per day; fines on hourly checkouts are $0.50 per hour.

Faculty may renew materials either by bringing them to the Media Services desk or by calling the desk at (202) 885-3250.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) instructors can reserve DVDs for use with the prior approval of Media Services full-time staff. OLLI affiliated patrons may be able to borrow items for class-related purposes outside of the library, but this requires advanced notice and approval from a Media Supervisor. This is restricted to low use and easily replaceable titles. OLLI participants may watch titles on site in Media Services after presenting their library issued borrowing card.

Home Use Policy:

Approximately 7000 of the feature films in the collection have been cataloged for home use and may be circulated to AU students and staff on a three day loan. Some feature film titles acquired specifically for class use are not designated for home use. Titles reserved at any time during the semester for class use and other high use items will not be circulated for home use; these items may only be viewed in Media Services.

Finding Home Use Titles:

Titles by topic are on our Pinterest page.

For a current list of the complete Home Use Collection, do the following catalog keyword search: "home use collection".

Borrowing from other WRLC libraries:

WRLC member libraries have a joint agreement to lend videos (with restrictions) to other member libraries for the express purpose of classroom use. AU faculty can request consortium videos through mediashare. Additionally, all AU faculty, staff and students can request consortium owned videos through CLS. Availability is determined on a title by title basis.

Consortium faculty, students and staff may borrow selected current Home Use Collection DVDs directly at AU. Borrowing is subject to AU class needs and must be approved by Media Services full-time staff. Loans are for three days and fines are $1.20 per day overdue.
