Kogod Jumps Nearly 30 Places in U.S. News Ranking
American University’s Kogod School of Business jumped nearly 30 places in the best undergraduate business programs category of the 2010 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” ranking.
The ranking, based on a survey of deans and senior faculty of undergraduate business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), places Kogod at 57. While Kogod was included in previous editions of the ranking—coming in at 83 for several years—this is the first time the school has moved so close to the top 50.
“Improving and enhancing the student experience at the Kogod School of Business is a thoughtful and purposeful endeavor on which our faculty and staff are constantly focused,” said Richard M. Durand, Robert and Arlene Kogod Dean. “This ranking is an acknowledgment by our peer institutions of Kogod's increasing momentum in the market.”
The U.S. News ranking is the latest in a series of rankings for Kogod. Weeks ago, the school’s MBA program debuted on Forbes’s 2009 installment of its “Best Business Schools” ranking. Earlier this year, the undergraduate program broke into BusinessWeek’s “Best Undergraduate Business Schools” at 28, and the global management program was selected as one of the top 15 in the nation in Entrepreneur magazine’s and the Princeton Review’s Student Choice Ratings.
A New Era of Advancement
Since 2008, Kogod has launched five new academic programs: the bachelor of science in business, language, and culture; the bachelor of science in business and music; an undergraduate concentration in entrepreneurship and innovation; and master of science programs in finance and real estate.
Another enhancement to Kogod’s academics is the appointment of four new tenure-track professors and five new executive in residence faculty members.
Kogod has also experienced advances in its cocurricular programs. The number of student competitors for the Kogod Gartenhaus Financial Case Competition, an annual event, grew to a whopping 270 in 2009—the largest number in the competition’s 17-year history. The school launched Making a Difference Is Our Business, a community service program for MBA students that became so popular during its first year that the program extended into the summer sessions and will continue into the 2009-2010 academic year.
A New Home, A New Sense of Pride
The new 21,000 square-foot building expansion boasts a lab that provides a virtual Wall Street trading floor experience; a behavioral research lab faculty and students can use to conduct studies about human behavior related to business issues such as marketing, management, and teamwork; seven classrooms, two of which are outfitted with technology for video conferencing and podcasting; and a new Career Services Suite, among other amenities.
