On February 26, 1993, the American University Board of Trustees officially made the School of Communication (SOC) independent from the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), where it had resided since 1977. At face value, the move was a typical institutional reorganization. But from that change came a quarter century of growth that has impacted thousands of students who learned their craft here, and by extension, the millions of people touched by the media and scholarship they produce.
