This weekend, American University’s Mock Trial Team will host the inaugural WONK Trial Invitational. Undergraduates from 20 college and university teams throughout the region will assume prosecution, defense, and witness roles in simulated trials of a driver charged with murder and DUI.
Verdicts will be handed down and competitors scored by 60 local attorneys and judges.
In just its fourth year of competition, the AU team looks to build on last season’s success which included several top-5 team finishes and multiple individual honors. The team is coached by Jessica Waters, assistant professor of justice, law and society. Waters, a former litigator specializing in criminal defense, received her BA and JD from American.
Other DC area schools participating include Georgetown, Howard, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, and University of Maryland Baltimore County.
