Prominent Environmentalists to Speak at AU and Celebrate Reilly Award Winners

WHAT: The Center for Environmental Policy at American University’s School of Public Affairs will celebrate the 2017 winners of the annual William K. Reilly Awards for Environmental Leadership and hear from accomplished leaders in environment, sustainability and public health.

Background: The Center for Environmental Policy's William K. Reilly Awards for Environmental Leadership recognize individuals in environmental careers who demonstrate leadership, innovation, engagement of diverse interests, effective problem solving, and contributions to future generations of environmental leaders.

This year’s Reilly Award will be shared by Claire Barnett is the founder and Executive Director of the Healthy Schools Network and Ben and Vannesa Henneke the founders of The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program (TST).

TIST is a reforestation program that works with more than 80,000 smallhold farmers in developing countries to counteract the devastating effects of deforestation, erosion, famine, droughts and floods through an innovative solution: planting millions of trees.

Healthy Schools Network is a national non-profit organization that works to ensure that every child attends an environmentally healthy school. It promotes reforms to improve school design and siting, to advance the use of green products in schools, and to expand public health services for children at risk of or with suspected school-based exposures to environmental hazards.

The annual award is named in honor of William K. Reilly, former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Mr. Reilly currently serves on the Boards of several environmental organizations including the World Wildlife Fund and the ClimateWorks Foundation, among others. He is also a Co-Chairman of the Bipartisan Policy Center Energy Project.

Keynote speaker, Jay Faison, CEO and Founder of the ClearPath Foundation, will deliver the keynote address. In 2015, Politico named Mr. Faison one of the top 50 “visionaries transforming American politics” in 2015.
