What We Do

AU Experts

Our office maintains a print and online guide, of American University experts in a variety of topics. The guide helps reporters and writers looking for comment on issues in the news. We proactively reach out to news media to ensure their familiarity with university experts. AU faculty experts are frequently quoted in major news outlets, asked to testify before Congress, and invited to speak at public forums and conferences worldwide.

Publicity

Publicity: We write and distribute announcements for the university's Web page and the news media. These announcements publicize news, research, and events on campus to reporters and news organizations in Washington, D.C., and around the world.

  • Hometown News: To recognize students for their achievements, we distribute hometown releases to local newspapers. Email aumedia@american.edu for assistance with hometown news.

  • Calendar Listings: Media Relations is responsible for submitting event information to external media. To promote events open to the general public, submit basic event details to aumedia@american.edu at least one month in advance. Please note: Calendar listings have varying deadlines and are published by editors' discretion.

Crisis & Issues Management

We coordinate communication strategies for university issues including major announcements, new and emerging issues, and rapid-response situations. We regularly work with colleagues to develop effective ways to communicate news and information about issues impacting the daily lives of students, staff, and coworkers within the university community. In these instances, the Executive Director of University Communications and Marketing serves as the university's chief spokesperson with the Director of Media Relations serving as deputy spokesperson.
