April 2004 Senioritis.
We all had it one way or another. Remember those last few
weeks of college, knowing you should study, but just not feeling
so compelled to when you had already moved on to the next
thing – plans for traveling, moving, or starting a new
job?
The student intern I have come to rely on in my office for
the last two years is about to graduate, and I feel like a
sappy but proud surrogate parent as I watch her prepare to
move on to the next phase in her life. I’m not sure
it has really sunk in yet that she won’t be showing
up here for work next week – for either of us. I couldn’t
help but want to tell her to give herself one more week of
freedom, though, when I overheard her telling her new employer
on the phone that she would start the Monday after graduation
full-time. Wait a little longer, I thought to myself. Why
rush reality?
Whatever
combination of free time, nurturing learning environment,
and carefree attitude it is that we tend to romanticize about
our student days, I want to bottle it, cliché as that
may sound. I find myself wondering what that magic was and
looking for ways to revive it. But then, maybe that’s
why I work here at AU – to try ‘n hold onto that
hopeful world view and the joy of learning. Someday, though
hopefully not too soon, my student intern will know this feeling,
too. For now, I’m enjoying the moments of seeing her
pass through this milestone, senioritis and all.
All
the best-
