February 2004 Is
it just me, or did February fly by? Maybe it’s just
that whole leap year thing, but it seems like having fewer
days makes the rest of them fuller.
The
biggest news on campus this month is re-accreditation. Sexy,
it’s not, but re-accreditation ensures that AU remains
intact as we all know it. And, since it only happens once
every 10 years, a ton of work goes into the process. That
said, after two years of preparation, the dedicated committee
that worked so hard on the report breathed a huge sigh of
relief to see the people who accredit AU leave campus with
praise.
In
other hot campus news, Archbishop Desmond Tutu is coming to
speak in March. This year’s KPU crew has outdone themselves,
having brought Gorbachev in the fall, and now Tutu. Word has
it they’ve got at least one more big name slated to
visit campus before the year’s out, so stay tuned.
Last
but not least, thanks to the 1,076 alums who made a gift to
AU since my last writing, the alumni participation rate has
climbed to nearly 14%. With just two more months to go til
the fiscal year ends, we hope to continue our upward trend
and hit 19% alumni giving participation before April 30 (up
from 17% last year, and 14% the year before that).
All
the best-

P.S. Last month, several people wrote in to verify the answer
to the Trivia Question. I double-checked with AU's archivist,
and while there were discussions of reviving the football
team in 1946 after the war and again in the mid-1960s, official
AU football never returned after 1941. Club football teams
did play in the 1960s and 70s, however.
